Just mention ‘Canada’ or ‘Rocky Mountains’ to me and my heart starts leaping up and down. And when I “accidentally” stumble upon Canada images on Instagram, that same heart beats out of my chest from sheer excitement. My boyfriend and I just have to exchange looks to sigh melancholically when we remember our time in the Canadian Rockies.
Even though my boyfriend doesn’t believe in pickup lines, he did utter the most perfect one when he was courting me: “Would you like to go with me to Canada?” This was after he showed me the thousands of travel pictures from his last Canada trip, each one accompanied by ever more exciting or adventurous anecdotes. I wanted to hop on a plane with him right there and then!
But I had to wait another 9 months and some gruelling final exams before I would see the mountains that were calling me. After my last exam I had exactly 12 hours left to pack and another 12 hours later my heart climbed aboard the rollercoaster of emotions that the Rocky Mountains instilled on me. I was perplexed, grateful, happy and most of all free! 🙂
Since my Canadian travel adventure in 2013 I probably wrote thousands of blog posts about my favorite travel destination and I still think I haven’t really captured the essence of Canada. In part because the beauty of Canada can’t be captured in words or pictures, but only in experience. You really have to touch foot on Canadian soil yourself in order to fill your heart.
I do have to warn you though. Once you visited the Canadian Rocky Mountains it will be the trip you will compare all your other travels to. We travelled to the Balkan mountains the year after, but it wasn’t half as impressive as the Rocky Mountains. The majestic view we had over the Pyrenees last year reminded us only a tiny bit and even if mysterious Japan captivated our souls, it never really touched our hearts.
We try to travel the globe with the little vacation days that we have. South America, Asia and Africa are high upon our bucket list, but really we just want to go back to Canada. Back to those elegant pines, snowcapped mountains, crystal blue lakes and most of all back to that feeling of never-ending freedom and joyful happiness!
This picture on the phone we took overviewing the gorgeous Berg Lake. I can’t not pick up!
